1. Introduction
For seventy years, humans have entered the digital world. What happens when the computer can enter ours?
Status Quo
Computers have transformed human capabilities beyond recognition with:
- Networks
- Graphics processing
- Storage capacity
- Artificial Intelligence capability
- Absolute multivariable capability
- Sensing / reading
Yet, the user & human interface context has remained remarkably stable. People approach a physical surface or device, look through a rectangular display, and communicate through discrete encoded keyboard inputs; even many “spatial” systems still just simply reproduce this paradigm by floating rectangles in 3D space, such as VR technology 1 (Meta Quest 3).
Something that does partially address the question are the developments in AR technology2, where camera-based spatial reading does take into account the 3D geometric positioning of the user’s environment — thus evidence that we are, in some ways, making progress of the transition. However, AR is currently still building upon the old architectures of the ancient digital world, still confining us into rectangular web pages and windows.
What I challenge, with this summary, is simply to evolve the original structure of the internet, to add another dimension. Just another layer of depth, because to put it simply, computation has advanced enormously; the unexplored boundary between computation and the physical world has advanced much less.
